History

In the 1800s it was said all that was needed for any western town to boast of future hope was a blacksmith shop, a small general store and a Methodist preacher. In 1839, the original church was organized in the log home of Mr. James Hull. In 1843, Owen Thorpe plotted the town of Brazil--two blocks square. Later that year, Owen Thorpe gave a lot on the southwest corner of Church Street and Franklin Street for a combined church, town hall and school. A one-room log house was constructed at a cost of $4.40 for nails and glass. All else was donated.

The log church expanded to 75 members and a new frame church was dedicated in 1858. By 1877 a new structure was needed. The new building was dedicated in 1878, costing $12,000. The church bell which had originally been given by Mr. Eli Hendrix for the log church was moved to the new Hendrix Chapel.

By 1899 the city was booming and the Official Board was presented with a pledge of $9,000 for a new church home. The old building was torn down and the cornerstone of the present building was laid. On June 23, 1901, the present church was dedicated.
